While Windows 10 Fall Creators Update aka Redstone 3 is at the final stage of the development; Engineers at Microsoft already begun working on the next version of the Windows 10. Yep, Windows 10 Redstone 4.

Meanwhile, Microsoft decided to allow Fast Ring insiders get the early access of these builds. In order to get the early access to Redstone 4 builds Windows Insider can choose “Skip Ahead” option from the drop-down in via Settings > Update & security > Windows Insider Program. Along with the early builds insiders will also receive updates to the windows 10 inbox apps such as Photos, Skype, Groove, and Movies & TV.

This is not the first time that Microsoft forking the development branch. Earlier they already did the same with Creators Update. Windows Insiders in the Fast ring will continue to get builds for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update from this branch. Windows Insiders who choose to skip ahead will receive builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch.

In other words they added a new branch. RS_PRERELEASE branch will receive update for new build and inbox app update while RS3_RELEASE will only receive builds with fixes and improvements.

Since they just forked the branch so for time being both the branch will be on same build right now. But in future, RS_PRERELEASE branch will jump and start receiving updates. Take a note that user will not be able to leave Skip Ahead and go back to builds from the RS3_RELEASE branch without reinstalling Windows. But with the public roll out of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update they will merge RS_PRERELEASE and RS3_RELEASE branch.

Well of course the builds from the RS_PRERELEASE will be less stable so it is recommended to not to install these update on your primary device. So the bottom line skip ahead will get the early access to the Redstone 4 features such Timeline, more Fluent Design element in inbox app. etc. Are you looking forward to join the development branch?
